The oldest vegan society in the world, The Vegan Society, wants the Welsh government to add more vegan options to menus in schools, hospitals and other public sector canteens to provide options for the growing plant-based population. They will be launching a petition this summer.
According to The Vegan Society spokeswoman, Dominika Piasecka: “By public sector canteens we mean places like hospitals, schools, prisons, universities, workplaces, etc. Basically anywhere where you go not out of choice but because you have to eat.
“If there is no vegan option in places like that, it’s a problem as there isn’t always a good alternative.”
Campaigns like Veganuary have contributed to the rise in veganism in the United Kingdom. Currently, over 3.5 million people identify themselves as vegan in the UK, up from 540,000 in 2016.
There is even a huge festival around the UK that spreads veganism, called Viva!. Cardiff has been a host city, and was also a top participant in Veganuary.
If anybody is going to go vegan, now is definitely the best time to do it.
