Vegan actress Rooney Mara has teamed up with her friend, Sara Schloat, to launch a vegan fashion line.
The new label, Hiraeth, features elegant and cruelty-free clothing and accessories, free from leather, silk and wool.
Mara herself has been vegan for seven years and found it hard to find leather-free clothing and shoes that matched with her principles.
“I realized there aren’t many [faux leather] options available for someone like me who is interested in design and wants high-quality pieces,” Mara said in a recent Vogue interview.
“In fast fashion, you can find faux leather boots that are really cheap, but while it’s cruelty-free in the animal sense, I didn’t necessarily know where those things were made, or if they were cruel towards humans,” she continued. “I didn’t want to compromise on either thing, and I wanted pieces that were made to last. So it really came out of my own need.”
Mara began with shoes – more specifically, combat boots.
“Finding a pair of really nice vegan combat boots is sort of impossible – the kind you can dress up, but also run around town in. That was my first order of business,” Mara said.
From there, the project paved its way into a footwear/ready-to-wear clothing line. Mara’s line is not only cruelty-free, but it is also made to last.
“There’s so much waste, so it’s important for us to make pieces you can wear forever, or at least, long enough for it to mean something.”
Mara’s line is produced in Los Angeles, California, and the actress has had the time to meet every single person involved in bringing her line to life. This way, she knows that everyone and everything involved is treated ethically.
