Dame Patsy Reddy became the first vegan and third female to receive the title of New Zealand’s Governor-General.

Reddy celebrated with a banquet featuring a plant-based menu, composed of several unique dishes, including shiitake mushroom consomme, steamed buns with miso roasted eggplant and roasted cucumber, crispy fried tofu with lemongrass and more!

The four chefs at the Government House stated that they will continue to come up with plant-based menus not only for the new Governor-General, but for visitors and future events as well.

“It’s just quite exciting to hear we have a vegan Governor General,” said Claire Insley, spokesperson for Vegan Society in New Zealand. “I’m sure it will bring it into the mainstream.”

In addition to being the Queen’s representative, Reddy will also serve as Commander-in-Chief of the military group, Royal Guard of Honour.

Dame Patsy Reddy is the 21st Governor-General of New Zealand, to be exact.
