Saudi Arabian Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed, animal rights activist, vegan, and founder and CEO of KBW Investments, announced that he will be opening at least 10 plant-based restaurants in the Middle East by 2020 to help lower the region’s rising obesity rate.

“Our region occupies parts of the top ten most obese counties in the world,” Prince Khaled wrote on Facebook. “This is crazy and frankly a joke we have reached this level. I’m not saying opening 10 restaurants will solve this issue, but you better believe it’s a step in the right direction.”

The restaurants will open in eight cities in countries including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Lebanon, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates.

Prince Khaled is a vegan and animal lover. He is keen on promoting clean energy and went vegan after a hunting trip he participated in and he described as “cowardly.”
