Vancouver is finally getting it’s first vegan cheese shop! Set to open this February, Blue Heron Creamery will be located on East Van’s Main Street and will be run by business partners Karen McAthy and Colin Medhurst.

As a vegan for more than 20 years, McAthy did not enjoy eating store-bought cheese. Previously a chef at Graze Vegetarian (which is no longer open), she began researching into the science behind dairy-free cheese.

Since then, she has concocted over 20 different vegan cheeses and has even written a cookbook, The Art of of Plant-Based Cheesemaking. McAthy works with a range of nuts, including almonds, walnuts, pecans, cashews and hazelnuts, alongside coconut milk.

It certainly took Vancouver a while to keep up with the growing vegan trend. Blue Heron Creamery will open mid-February at 2410 Main Street and will feature dairy-free cheeses alongside vegan butter and yoghurt. Blue Heron first launched in 2016 as a vegan cheese-making and catering company.
