Victory! As of March 1st, people in Switzerland will no longer be able to boil lobsters while they are conscious.

Anyone who thinks lobsters are not sentient beings should think again. According to a recent report presented to the European Commission, scientists had no doubt seeing that lobsters feel pain and suffering in the same way humans do. The act of boiling them alive is nothing less than cruel as the crustaceans scrape on the edges of the pots to escape the boiling water.

In addition, lobsters will receive special care while being transported.

According to the new law: “Live crustaceans, including the lobster, may no longer be transported on ice or in ice water. Crustaceans now must be stunned before they are killed.”

While this may not sound as big of a deal as Norway banning fur farms, every small step counts. At the end of the day, every little step towards compassionate living paves the way for bigger ones to come.
