Ringling Bros. Circus is Closing After 146 Years

SHARE

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus recently announced that they will be closing their show after 146 years.

Last year, the circus announced that they would be ending elephant acts by May 2016. Now, they have let us all know that “The Greatest Show on Earth” will close this May.

According to their website, ticket sales were decreasing after dropping their elephant acts and tours were becoming costly. This left the circus no choice but to announce that their 2017 tour will include 30 stops and end in May.

While the circus brings back so many memories for some, it is good news for others. Ingrid Newkirk from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animlals (PETA) said in a statement:

“After 36 years of PETA protests, which have awoken the world to the plight of animals in captivity, PETA heralds the end of what has been the saddest show on Earth for wild animals, and asks all other animal circuses to follow suit, as this is a sign of changing times.”

Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, joined in with the comments. She tweeted:

“A major moment as big brands that harm animals fade away and more humane businesses emerge I applaud @RinglingBros announcement.”

We also applaud Ringling Bros. for their decision to end the “saddest show on Earth,” and we are excited to see whether other animal circuses will follow.
