Modern Love Opens a Location in New York

Something new has been added to New York’s list of vegan eateries! Chef Isa Chandra Moskowitz has decided to open a second location of her restaurant, Modern Love, in Brooklyn, NY.

Modern Love’s first location opened in Omaha, Nebraska in 2014. They are known for serving “swanky vegan comfort food,” such as Reuben sandwiches and barbeque seitan.

However, while the food in Nebraska is a hit, Modern Love’s brand new location will be able to seat twice as many people. In addition, they will be serving unique dishes, but with a regional twist.

“In Nebraska, we try to do chilli and cinnamon rolls because that’s a Nebraska thing,” chef Moskowitz told Paste Magazine. “We do Runzas and a lot of corn. [At the new location], we’re focusing on the regional dishes from here, that’s the biggest difference. Say we’re going to have matzah ball soup. I don’t know if that would fly in Omaha. The same way with chilli and cinnamon rolls. I don’t know how it would go over here, because it’s not something people are used to. The whole concept of Modern Love is a vegan translation of traditional food with whole ingredients and make it even better. I think, where the locations are, they influence us.”

Chef Moskowitz has been very active in the vegan world, as she has even written a few cookbooks of her own, including VeganomiconVegan with a Vengeance and Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World. The inspiration for her cookbooks came from the show, Post Punk Kitchen, which she hosted from 2003 to 2005.

New York has been the centre of attention for vegans this year. We can begin with Ravi de Rossi, who has plans to “veganize” all of his 15 restaurants, starting with The Bourgeois Pig, which turned into an all-vegan tapas bar, known as Ladybird, a few months ago. In addition, there has also been animal rights activity around the city, as activist Kiki Adami wants every single restaurant in New York to serve vegan options.

As we are almost entering the month of October, we are excited to see what vegans have in store for us for the rest of the year!
