Doctors Ask For Meatless and Sugar-Free Meals in American Hospitals

stethoscopeA large group of physicians just made the best decision Americans could have ever made for their health. The American Medical Association (AMA) House of Delegates – which is composed of 200,00 physicians – recently issued a policy statement to remove any cancer-causing foods from hospitals – including processed meats and sugary beverages.

This resolution aims to not only have hospital staff educate patients on the effects of a poor diet, but to also provide a good example by serving healthier food.

“American Medical Association hereby call on U.S. hospitals to improve the health of patients, staff, and visitors by providing a variety of healthful food, including plant-based meals and meals that are low in fat, sodium, and added sugars, eliminating processed meats from menus, and providing and promoting healthful beverages,” the resolution states.

The menus at American hospitals are amongst the worst in the world. Everything that’s served is linked to some sort of disease, whether it is heat disease, obesity, diabetes or cancer. This is somewhat ironic because patients usually go to the hospital to get treated for these diseases and conditions.

In fact, PCRM President Dr. Neil Barnard, who spoke at the AMA meeting, made a note on tobacco and how eating a sausage is just as bad.

“A generation ago, the AMA supported doctors who were working to get tobacco out of their hospitals. And that helped everyone, especially those patients who needed to break a bad habit,” Dr. Barnard said in a testimony.

He also noted that sausages, just like tobacco, have cancer-causing agents, stating: “[M]any doctors and administrators would like to replace them with healthier foods.”

This resolution will hopefully be the basis of a healthier America. The day might just come where American hospitals will be geared more towards fixing broken bones rather than helping someone lose weight due to a poor diet or treating meat-linked disease.
